North Carolina State University police: Drug overdose may be cause of man's death

(RALEIGH, North Carolina) -- Police at North Carolina State University say a man who died in the back of a campus police car is believed to have suffered a drug overdose.

Chief Thomas Younce says he reviewed transcripts of North Carolina police radio traffic on the night of November 2, when Brandon Burnett was arrested at a campus checkpoint.

Younce says he believes North Carolina officers did the right thing that evening. Burnett's mother is questioning whether North Carolina police sought help quickly enough.

During a traffic stop, police discovered Burnett's license had been suspended and that he was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a drug charge.

Burnett was handcuffed and placed him in the back of a cruiser.

Within about 50 minutes of the traffic stop, Burnett started experiencing problems. A few minutes later, he began having seizures and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
