North Carolina: Do Bail Bonds Cost You Money?CHARLOTTE, North Carolina -- An Eyewitness News investigation centers on a Pennsylvania bail bond company Capital Bonding.
A trail of drugs led police to a tiny neighborhood in north Charlotte in May when they arrested a man named Epifanio Carbajal on charges of trafficking Marijuana.
Four days later, a bondsman posted more than $80,000 for Carbajal, but when it came time for Carbajal to go to court in July, he disappeared.
About 15 percent, or one in six of those charged with a crime in North Carolina, doesn't show up for court.
But Carbajal's case is in a special group.
It's one of hundreds of cases listed in printouts involving Capital Bonding.
The company's web site says they will get you out of jail any time, anywhere.
The company collects millions in bonding fees up front, but some say they're not doing enough to make sure they show up for court.
The numbers caught the attention of Brian Shipwash, Clerk of Court in Davidson County, North Carolina.
After closely examining documents, Shipwash said he noticed that Capital was arranging big bonds for suspects local bondsmen considered too risky.
"All three of these cases were felony trafficking cocaine. Hispanic males who were not from this area," Shipwash said.
"The likelihood of them showing up for court is very unlikely. I think they get as many agents as possible to write as many bonds as possible with what appears to be no conscience whatsoever whether the defendant appears or not," he added.
Shipwash said the problem is even more evident in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina where bondsmen working through Capital Bonding have gotten suspects out of jail, only to have them miss court.
Eyewitness News contacted Capital Bonding's president who said they do go after suspects that skip court. Drug Rehab by County
