North Carolina attorney general aims to clear meth labs

SALISBURY, North Carolina -- North Carolina's attorney general wants neighbors in Rowan County, North Carolina to know about a growing problem in their backyards and what they can do about it.

The problem is methamphetamine labs. Some of the North Carolina state's top law officers said communities can get involved to eliminate these dangerous labs from staying open.

A seminar was held Friday and the focus was on businesses like hardware stores and pharmacies. The key ingredients to meth are found in both types of businesses.

North Carolina law enforcement said making the labs go away may begin with making businesses more alert.

"With meth labs, they're in the house next door. They're right in our own back yards," North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper said.

Friday’s seminar was the first of its kind in North Carolina. Cooper said he is pushing for tougher penalties for meth cooks, help for children found in meth labs and an increased public awareness of the problem.

"I think it's great that they're coming to town to try and stop this, the drug abuse in town and every place else,” said Terrill Griffis. “It's all over the country. It's not just here."
